How to Lose Belly Fat Fast Effectively

Have you seen how many people ask for advice in order to lose stomach fat? Have you read all these columns in magazines and online journals where hundreds of people are wondering how to lose belly fat fast? It seems that belly is the main area of concern both for men and women who are looking to lose some extra weight. Six packs and cut abs are the primer sex symbol of the modern times. But how can someone used to beers and burgers can lose the accumulated fat?
It is not that difficult as many people think; in fact it only require dedication and focusing on the goal. Diet is the most important step to shedding the extra weight on the belly. Regardless of age, a low fat diet can help you maintain good levels of fat in your body, avoiding accumulation of ugly fat. Low calorie diets and low fat plans are equally important, although if you have to stick with one of the two, you should opt for the low calories.
Belly fat bears the same characteristics as any other fat in our body. If you burn more calories than you take, you will burn belly fat fast enough. You can also opt for fat bursting foods that feature a low glycemic index and can help you lose extra fat. Artichokes, asparagus, avocado, broccoli, celery and cucumber are just some of them.
Many people tend to start with weight loss formulas that promise them they will lose weight and fat within a few days; fad diets and shakes can probably help you lose belly fat fast, but they do not ensure that you will not regain it soon after. Eating low calorie foods and avoiding saturated fats will help you reduce the intake of empty calories and bad nutrients that cannot be metabolized or burned easily by your body.
Exercise is also the second most important step in fat busting. Exercise helps you burn calories faster; this makes your body turn into fat reserves which are used as fuel. Belly fat and any other additional fat you have will start disappearing fast - almost a week after you start exercising moderately.
What are the best types of exercises for belly fat loss? Cardio and weight training is the best combination. Cardio will help you burn calories fast and weight training will help you increase muscle mass.
The more muscles you have the faster your metabolism will be. Half hour of cardio exercise such as biking, running and half hour of active and fast paced weight training four times per week can help you lose belly fat fast.
Avoid misleading myths about belly fat can probably help you as well; do not believe claims that you will lose stomach fat if you work on the abs. Fat is not attached on the abdominal muscles but to the skin, therefore working on particular muscles will do you no good. Crunches and other abdominal exercises are not the answer on how to lose belly fat fast.
For more in-depth techniques on how to lose belly fat fast, I strongly encourage you to check out this Truth About Six Pack Abs review.

3 Vegetables That Help to Burn Belly Fat Fast

Do you know that there is a specific class of vegetables that contain very unique phytonutrients that actually help to burn belly fat fast.

Before I go on explaining what these unique vegetables are and why they help to burn stomach fat, let's see what are the chemicals that force your body to hold onto belly fat.

Something you may have never heard about is that certain chemicals in our food supply and our environment, such as pesticides, herbicides, and certain petrochemicals from air and water pollution, household cleaners, plastics, cosmetics, etc can react with your hormones and make your body store excess abdominal fat.

These harmful chemicals are known as xenoestrogens.

Xenoestrogens are chemicals that you are exposed to (and are hard to avoid in the modern world) that have an estrogenic effect in your body.  Excess exposure to these can cause hormone balance disruptions for both men and women. So if you thought this article was just for the guys, these chemicals can wreak havoc in the body for both guys and gals.

These estrogenic chemicals that we are exposed to on a daily basis can stimulate your body to store belly fat, along with many other problems (including cancer risks in the long term).

So if you are struggling to lose fat especially around the stomach area, here's where this specific class of vegetables comes in handy...

One of those cool tricks that I teach my clients that hire me for nutritional counseling is the use of cruciferous vegetables to help fight against stomach fat.

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, kale, bok choy, cabbage, etc. contain very specific and unique phytonutrients such as indole-3-carbinol (I3C) that help to fight against these estrogenic compounds.

And by fighting against these belly fat stimulating estrogenic chemicals, this is just 1 more step in helping you to lose stubborn belly fat!

So there you go... just another excuse to do what mom always told you and eat more broccoli and cauliflower!

I've really learned to like brussells sprouts in the last year too... Melt a little grass-fed cheese on them and some garlic and they're great!
If you wish to know more about other specific foods that help to combat the xenoestrogens and can help you to burn belly fat fast visit truthaboutabs here.

Tips to Lose Weight Fast - Burn More Fat

Talking about losing weight, you are actually looking at ways to burn that extra fat under your skin. A lot of people get confused between losing weight and losing fat. Weight loss, in the context of medicine, health or physical fitness, is a reduction of the total body mass, due to a mean loss of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue and/or lean mass, namely bone mineral deposits, muscle, tendon and other connective tissue.

If you want to lose weight, it is a lot more helpful to focus on losing fat, because weight reduction may only indicates you will be losing water weight. In order to burn more fat, you will need the proper workout combined with a suitable diet plan.
These are generally some suggestions to shed fat rapidly, which will make you look beautiful as well as toned in a short time.

A critical action you can take in order to lose fat quickly is to increase your lean body muscle. Nowadays, lots of people - especially women - draw back from this thought since they feel anxious that building up muscles can certainly make their body bigger instead of skinnier. Yet, as a matter of fact, increasing your body muscle will assist you to become slimmer and make your appearance firmer plus more toned. Let us discover why.

Muscle consumes more of your body's energy to uphold than fat does. As a matter of fact, fat could just lie there without doing anything and doesn't need your body energy so as to preserve it. On the other hand, muscle needs energy and the body supplies it with it via burning calories. When you have more muscle mass on your body, it will take more calories to preserve it.

This means that when you increase the muscle mass on your body, you will enhance your metabolism and get rid of extra calories. The good thing is that you will not only burn more calories through exercising, but also when you're not doing anything or even just resting as well. Obviously, if your body can burn more calories, it becomes easier for your body to get rid of fat rapidly and eventually you can lose weight effectively.

You can speed up your muscles building with some powerful workout to your session. If it is possible to do your strength exercising ahead of doing any cardio exercise in order that you continue to be strong as well as fresh and are capable to largely benefit from these power routines to the maximum. Furthermore, if you focus on the big muscle groups of your body such as your legs and your backside, you will be able to obtain quicker benefits. These large groups of muscle consume a huge amount of calories to preserve.

Losing weight is not easy if you are lack of motivation. Find ways to make your fat burning session more fun so that you don't easily give up.

Can Natural HGH Releaser Supplements Help Me Lose Weight?

While human growth hormone (HGH) exerts its multiple benefits in our bodies in a variety of ways, one of the great beneficial effects of sufficient levels of human growth hormone is increased body metabolism. You should remember that an increased metabolism means increased fat loss.

How come HGH has a role in weight loss?

You must know that human growth hormone actually works by increasing the amount of IGF-1 (insulin like growth factor, a hormone with growth effects in children and anabolic effects in adults) that a person's liver excretes.

IGF-1 prevents insulin from transporting glucose to cells. Normally, after you eat, your pancreas releases the amount of insulin necessary to transform carbohydrates into glucose. Your body then stores this glucose in fat cells and uses it for energy. HGH induced IGF-1 prevents insulin from storing this glucose in cells, therefore forcing your body to burn fat for energy.
Normally, a person's body uses all of their glucose for energy before seeking that energy from their fat reserves. Human growth hormone forces your body to seek energy from the fat reserves first. This results in significant weight loss.

Because human growth hormone forces your body to burn fat for energy, it means that you will lose weight even in your inactive periods. Energy is required for all aspects of living. Therefore, HGH can force your body to burn fat while you are sleeping. Likewise, it allows you to eat large amounts of food without gaining excess unwanted weight. In other words, HGH can partially replace the need to diet.

Studies showing the weight loss effect of HGH

In a recent study, published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, researchers looked at the effects of giving obese people low doses of growth hormone in an attempt to help them selectively lose fat while retaining lean muscle tissue.

The study consisted of 59 obese men and women, whose average BMI was 37 (BMI is a measure of weight for height). The participants gave themselves nighttime injections containing 200 µg of growth hormone or a placebo for one month. For the next five months, the dosage of growth hormone was increased to 400 µg per day in men and 600 µg in women. Researchers say the increase was necessary because prior studies show resistance to the drug can develop over time, especially among women. Both groups were prescribed a diet and were instructed on lifestyle modification and exercise.

Among the 39 people who completed the 6-month treatment and follow up, the study showed that those who used human growth hormone lost an average of about 5 pounds and kept it off for up to nine months. Researchers say the weight loss was entirely caused by a loss of body fat.
The study also showed that growth hormone improved cholesterol profiles, increasing the level of "good" HDL cholesterol by 19%. There was no significant change in fasting glucose levels or insulin resistance, which indicates diabetes risk.

In another study published in August 2001 issue of the International Journal of Obesity, it was found that a low dose of the human growth hormone in combination with a restricted diet decreased insulin resistance while increasing muscle mass in obese type 2 diabetic patients. At the conclusion of the study, the researchers concluded the natural HGH releaser supplements can aid in weight loss.

Therefore, there is enough evidence that clearly shows that HGH (if present in sufficient levels) in your body can help you lose weight in addition to its key benefits such as muscle building and immune system strengthening.

5 Reasons Why Most People Don't Succeed In Weight Loss Plan

Here are 5 reasons why most people don't succeed in their weight loss diet plan.

1. They simply don't understand the benefits of losing weight
2. They are not ready to the permanent lifestyle changes
3. They don't know how to lose weight in a healthy way
4. They are not motivated enough
5. They don't really care to know what they are consuming everyday.

1. People don't truly understand the benefits of losing weight. Why do most want to lose weight? Most would say to look better. Looking better certainly is a benefit of losing weight, but this shouldn’t be the sole reason to lose weight. There is a higher health risk for overweight people. Being overweight for a long period of time kills thousands of people each year. Thousands of studies have shown and proven without any doubt that losing body fat will improve and lengthen your life. Knowing the dangers of being overweight is a tremendous motivator to not only lose fat, but to keep it off.

2. People don't commit to permanent lifestyle changes. So many people think of a "diet" as something temporary. When they are on a "diet" they restrict themselves so much that they are miserable. Sooner or later failure is inevitable because of the unreasonable demands of most "diets." Some of these diets force you to only eat certain foods (e.g., no carbs, special soups etc…) You, like myself, have probably tried them before. The key to losing weight long term is to make gradual lifestyle changes you can stick to forever.

3. Most individuals are not provided the truthful facts of losing weight and becoming healthier. With the conflicting information in the media, and all of the different lose weight quick fad diets, it’s understandable why so many people really don’t know the truth about losing fat and keeping it off long term.

4. Most people don't understand they are constantly either gaining fat, or losing fat. There is no in-between. Some people justify binging or giving up because they hit a small road-block. This isn’t an all or nothing game. For example, when I was overweight, if I ate an unhealthy lunch, I’d go ahead and eat an unhealthy dinner since I already "messed up" the day. Or I’d say, I’ll start eating healthy on Monday since I’ve already eaten poorly this weekend. Every person at times eats too much. The successful people will not let a road bump completely derail their entire lifestyle change. If you are not implementing positive lifestyle changes and losing weight, you are gaining weight. Again, there is no "in-between."

5. Different foods have different amount of calories and fat. If you want to lose weight fast, you need to know how much calories and how fat you can take foe each day. Most people don't realize what they consume each day. So many overweight people eat thousands of extra calories and fat without realizing it. It’s tough to know if you are gaining weight or losing weight each day unless you are keeping an eye on what you’re consuming.

The difference between subcutaneous fat and the more deadly "visceral fat" - Part 2

by Mike Geary, Certified Nutrition Specialist, Certified Personal Trainer
author of best-selling program: The Truth about Six-Pack Abs

The difference between subcutaneous fat and the more deadly "visceral fat"- Part 1 here...

So what gets rid of extra abdominal fat, including visceral fat?

Is there actually a REAL solution beyond all of the gimmicks and hype that you see in ads and on commercials for "miracle" fat loss products?

The first thing you must understand is that there is absolutely NO quick fix solution. There are no pills or supplements of any sort that will help you lose your abdominal fat faster. Also, none of the gimmicky ab rockers, rollers, or ab belts will help get rid of abdominal fat either. You can't spot reduce your stomach fat by using any of these worthless contraptions. It simply doesn't work that way.

The only solution to consistently lose your abdominal fat and keep it off for good is to combine a sound nutritious diet full of unprocessed natural foods with a properly designed strategic exercise program that stimulates the necessary hormonal and metabolic response within your body. Both your food intake as well as your training program are important if you are to get this right.

I've actually even seen a particular study that divided thousands of participants into a diet-only group and an exercise & diet combined group. While both groups in this study made good progress, the diet-only group lost significantly LESS abdominal fat than the diet & exercise combined group.

Now the important thing to realize is that just any old exercise program will not necessarily do the trick. The majority of people that attempt getting into a good exercise routine are NOT working out effectively enough to really stimulate the loss of stubborn abdominal fat. I see this every day at the gym.

Most people will do your typical boring ineffective cardio routines, throw in a little outdated body-part style weight training, and pump away with some crunches and side bends, and think that they are doing something useful for reducing their abdominal fat. Then they become frustrated after weeks or months of no results and wonder where they went wrong.

Well, the good news is that I've spent over a decade researching this topic, analyzing the science, and applying it "in the trenches" with myself as well as thousands of my clients from all over the world to see what works to really stimulate abdominal fat loss.

From my research, two of the most important aspects to getting rid of visceral fat are:

1. The use of high intensity forms of exercise and full-body resistance training. Low intensity cardio exercise simply isn't as effective for removing visceral fat in particular. High intensity exercise such as interval training or full-body weight training are very effective at helping to improve your body's ability to manage glucose and increases insulin sensitivity, a crucial step in removing visceral fat. These types of high intensity exercise routines are also very effective at increasing your fat-burning hormones and creating a hormonal environment conducive to burning off abdominal fat, including visceral fat.

2. In addition, it's vitally important to get blood sugar under control to help restore insulin sensitivity through the right nutrition. This means greatly reducing sugars and refined starches in your diet (including fully eliminating any use of harmful high fructose corn syrup!), and focusing more of your diet on healthy fats (such as avocados, nuts, seeds, coconut fat, olive oil, free-range eggs, fatty fish and fish oils, etc), as well as increasing protein and fiber intake. The standard diet recommended by the government, which contains an unnaturally high grain intake is NOT conducive to controlling blood sugar and reducing visceral fat!

Reducing grain-based foods in your diet and getting more of your carbs from veggies and high fiber fruits such as berries can go a long way to helping to solve this problem.

The difference between subcutaneous fat and the more deadly "visceral fat" - Part 1

by Mike Geary, Certified Nutrition Specialist, Certified Personal Trainer
author of best-selling program: The Truth about Six-Pack Abs

Although this picture depicts an extremely overweight man, this article applies to dangerous types of fat inside the bodies of both men and women... and this discussion also applies even if you only have a slight amount of excess stomach fat.

Did you know that the vast majority of people in this day and age have excess abdominal fat? It's true -- as much as 70% of the population in some "westernized" countries such as the US and Australia are now considered either overweight or obese. The first thing that most people think of is that their extra abdominal fat is simply ugly, is covering up their abs from being visible, and makes them self conscious about showing off their body.

However, what most people don't realize is that excess abdominal fat in particular, is not only ugly, but is also a dangerous risk factor to your health. Scientific research has clearly determined that although it is unhealthy in general to have excess body fat throughout your body, it is also particularly dangerous to have excess abdominal fat.

There are two types of fat that you have in your abdominal area. The first type that covers up your abs from being visible is called subcutaneous fat and lies directly beneath the skin and on top of the abdominal muscles.

The second type of fat that you have in your abdominal area is called visceral fat, and that lies deeper in the abdomen beneath your muscle and surrounding your organs. Visceral fat also plays a role in giving certain men that "beer belly" appearance where their abdomen protrudes excessively but at the same time, also feels sort of hard if you push on it.

Both subcutaneous fat and visceral fat in the abdominal area are serious health risk factors, but science has shown that having excessive visceral fat is even more dangerous than subcutaneous fat. Both types of fat greatly increase your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, sleep apnea, various forms of cancer, and other degenerative diseases.

Excess stomach fat has also been associated in studies with higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), an indicator of inflammation within the body that can lead to heart disease and other health issues.

Part of the reason visceral fat is particularly dangerous is that studies show that it releases more inflammatory molecules into your system on a consistent basis.

One of the major reasons that some people accumulate more visceral fat than others can be from a high carbohydrate diet that leads to insulin resistance over time (years of bombarding your system with too much sugars and starches for your body to properly handle the constant excess blood sugar) ... and studies show that high fructose intake particularly from high-fructose corn syrup can be a major contributor to excess visceral fat.

If you care about the quality of your life and your loved ones, reducing your abdominal fat (including reducing visceral fat) should be one of your TOP priorities! There's just no way around it. Besides, a side effect of finally getting rid of all of that excessive abdominal fat is that your stomach will flatten out, and if you lose enough stomach fat, you will be able to visibly see those attractive six pack abs that everyone wants.

Things You Should Know about Body Fat before You wants To Lose Fat

Most of us want to lose fat because too much fat, especially subcutaneous fat, can be extremely bad for us. With obesity numbers climbing around the globe every year, we take a closer look at body weight, fat and weight loss.

Now let us look at the few reasons why people need to lose weight.

When a woman is overweight, it can affect her chances of getting pregnant as it affects their ovulation. When a woman is pregnant and overweight can cause many complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, certain infections, increased risk or a cesarean and having a baby that is larger than normal.

Being overweight is obviously bad for your health and can put you at risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, some cancers, gall bladder problems, high blood pressure, increase stress on the bones and joints and decreases life expectancy.

In your bid to lose fat, beware of stress. Stress can also cause a person to gain weight because the stress hormone cortical is released and that tells the body to store fat, mostly around your stomach.

Avoid taking bad stuff if you want lose more fat. The liver helps to burn fat, but when it is busy processing and eliminating toxins from alcohol, junk food and other toxic stuff that we put into the body, it cannot process and burn the fat as well as it normally would.

Make sure you have enough sleep if you want to lose weight fast, a lack of sleep can also cause you to put on weight as it causes hormone and chemical imbalances in the body. Leptin, the hormone that makes you feel full, decreases and the hormone ghrelin, which makes us feel hungry, increases.

Some fat cells are difficult to lose

You cannot actually lose the amount of fat cells that you have as once you reach a certain age, the numbers remain constant. While a certain amount will die over the course of a year, the body replaces them. Diet and exercise only shrinks the cells; it does not get rid of them and fat cells can increase as much as a whopping six times their size.

While liposuction and other drastic measures have instant effects and will reduce the number of fat cells you have, the body will actually replace them over the next couple of years. The only way to ensure that those fat cells do not increase in size again is to pay extremely close attention to what you eat and how much your exercise. If you do not change your diet and exercise habits, you will go back to your pre surgery weight.

When you are overweight or have extra weight around your stomach, fat surrounds your internal organs, which is where the health risks come from. In fact you can be you can be as thin as a bean but still have fat (visceral fat) around your organs and the worst kind for your health, in comparison to other body fat, known as subcutaneous fat. It increases your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer.

Lose bad fat but not good fat

Good fat is essential for bodily functions, and if you stop eating it altogether, the body cannot produce energy or absorb vitamins, hormone production is effected and blood has difficulty forming. This of course puts you at risk of a lot of health problems, including internal bleeding and weak bones. Good fats, the unsaturated kind also helps the body lower cholesterol and should make up 30 per cent of your calorie intake.

Rapid Weight Loss – Facts About Fad Diets

Fad diets are a diet plan that aims at losing weight, usually in a relatively rapid weight loss. Fad diets attract a large number of people who suffer from weight problems and are helplessly looking to some way of arriving at a shapely physique. The problem with fad diets is that their fat-reducing effect is temporary and results in quick regain of weight. What is worse is that most of these diets are harmful to health.

Fad diets are not as new as they might seem at first. These date back to the mid 19th century when an obese Londoner was prescribed such a diet on experimental basis. Now, after a century and a half, fad diets have become popular among people with weight problems. Teens and young adults especially flock to fad diets for answers to weight problems.

Fad diets are usually centered on a higher consumption of fats or proteins while stressing to go easy on or, in some cases, completely cut out carbohydrates. It is the low intake of carbohydrates that brings about rapid weight loss. In fact, this rapid loss is the loss of water that glycogen has stored. With loss of glycogen, the large amount of water stored in it is also lost and body weight drops. The fats are still there and as the fad diets are given up, the body regains its proportion of water lost. Weight is put back on as fast as it was lost.

Normally, carbohydrates remain the source of energy for work. With fad diets, the carbs are no longer there so the body starts using the stored fat, breaking it down. This may appear beneficial but in fact, it is not. In the absence of carbs, fats cannot be completely oxidized and put to work. Hence, the body feels fatigued and weak. In addition, the ketone molecules resulting from the fat-breakdown accumulate in the blood and are excreted out via urine, causing dehydration.

Given the harmful health effects of fad diets, it is important for us, especially the weight-conscious people, to recognize and beware of these diet plans.

Watch out for diets that:

• Promise quick weight loss
• Publicize before and after pictures
• Present weight-loss testimonials
• Tend to limit natural food choices
• Require a large sum of money

Fad diets may be popular for their rapid weight loss but they can greatly hurt your body and only provide temporally solution for weight loss. Be careful with any diet or exercise program and ask your doctor to be sure it is safe.

Exercise To Lose Weight Fast – Choosing The Perfect Gym

If you want to lose weight fast, you need to be on a diet to make sure that you are burning fat and building muscle. One of the best ways to lose weight fast is to join a gym. Gyms come in all shapes and sizes, and there may be a number of gyms in your area. Joining a gym can be expensive, so it is important that you careful consider all of the gyms near to your home in order to pick the very best one possible to meet you weight loss and exercise needs on a daily basis.

What to consider when choosing a gym

The first things you should consider when you are looking at gyms are the trainers. If you will be taking a class or working with a personal trainer, you will want to be sure that you are working with someone who is experienced and will teach you the best habits possible. Unfortunately, in some places there are no set qualifications for trainers, so you should check out gyms that do require training programs of their trainers.

Second, you should also look at the equipment available for your use and the hours the gym is open. A gym that only has one treadmill may not be the best choice, since you may find yourself standing in line for equipment during peak hours. You also may find that your exercise schedule is disrupted if the gym is open odd or short hours. It is very important to find a place that will allow you to have a great workout at a time of day that is convenient for you.

Third, cleanliness should also be of concern. All gyms should provide a tour of their facilities at the very least, or a free trial to check out the gym’s space on your own. If a gym is dirty, you could be susceptible to illnesses as they spread among members at the gym. They should provide a cleaning crew to make sure that the locker rooms are clean, as well as provide antibacterial products to wipe down the machines after workouts. Organization is important too—you do not want to be tripping over weights that are ling on the floor or feel cramped in a sweating high-volume area.

Lastly, you should check out prices. Some gym memberships are by the year while others charge your credit card or send you an invoice every month. Do what works for you. You may end up spending hundreds or thousands of collars on your gym membership, so it is important to find the gym that best suits your needs. Look at the ones closest to your home, but also consider those a bit farther away if they seem better to join.

How To Lose 20 Pounds Really, Really Fast

By Tom Venuto, NSCA-CPT, CSCS
www.burnthefat.com

Back “in the day” when I was a full time personal trainer and I met with weight loss clients in person at my New Jersey Health Club, the first thing I would always ask during the initial consultation was:
“Tell me what you want… and I’ll show you how to get it.”
Typical reply from client:
“I want to lose 20 pounds fast.”
My reply:
“Are you SURE that’s what you want? …If I can show you how to lose 20 pounds REALLY fast, will that make you happy?”

They nodded their head affirmatively as their eyes lit up in anticipation of the rapid weight loss secrets I was about to reveal…
Their face went white when - with a totally straight face – I pulled out a hacksaw and started walking towards them…. menacingly.

Not sure whether to laugh or run in sheer terror, they said,
“What the heck are you doing?”
“You said you wanted to lose 20 pounds fast. This is the easiest, surest, most effective way I know to take 20 pounds off you FAST! In fact, I figure that right leg of yours might even weigh 25 pounds!”
I kept walking closer and started to get into sawing position, wielding my fast, effective and guaranteed weight loss tool…
“Bear with me because this IS quick, but sometimes it takes a few minutes for me to cut through the bone.”
By this time, my client (and I) are either completely cracking up, I have seriously scared the living you know what out of them, or they just think I’m a complete lunatic… (depends on whether I was able to keep a straight face or not)

Finally, the light bulb goes on, and my client would see where I was going with this:
“Okay, smart alec,” I get it… I don’t want to lose WEIGHT, I want to lose FAT.”
Sometimes I would be having so much fun, I would just keep on playin’…
“But why not? This is easy, fast and guaranteed - just what everyone wants these days… it’s even better than taking a pill! Come on… let me hack it off! You’ll be my next testimonial: ‘I lost 20 pounds in 5 minutes!’ Imagine what that will do for my business!”
“Very funny. I told you, I get it! I want to lose FAT, not muscles and bones. I need my leg!”
Naturally, of course, I don’t always have to pull out my trusty blade. Every once in a while… about as often as a total solar eclipse… a client answers my question like this:
“What do I want?
Tom, I want to lose 20 pounds of body fat in the next 12 weeks. I want to do it slowly, safely and healthfully and then keep it off permanently. I want all the fat around my hips and thighs completely gone and I want a firm flat stomach. I want muscle all over my body while still looking feminine. I’d like to see myself at about 16% body fat and maintain all my muscle or gain a few pounds of lean mass if I can, especially in my arms. This is important to me because I want to set a good example for my kids, I want to be healthy and live to at least 90 and I want my husband to look at me and say, “I love your body,” and I want to be able to *honestly* say back to him, “me too!”
It is on these rare occasions that I know there is still intelligent life on this planet.

If you could answer the question, “What do you want” with the lucidity, clarity and specificity that this woman did, I don’t think you would ever have any difficulty reaching your health and fitness goals… or any other goal in your life, for that matter.
Her answer was what you call a very “well-formed” goal, backed up with lots of emotional motivation-inducing “reasons why.”

“I want to lose weight” is a poorly-formed goal.
“Weight” is not the same as “fat.” Weight includes muscle, bone, internal organs as well as lots and lots of water.

WHAT YOU REALLY WANT IS TO BURN THE FAT, WHILE KEEPING THE MUSCLE!!!!
FAT LOSS is what you want, not weight loss.

If your body were 100% rock-solid muscle, with absolutely nothing that jiggled (unless it was supposed to), would you care how much you weighed?

I bet you wouldn’t! And if that’s true, then…

STOP WORSHIPPING THE SCALE AND START MEASURING YOUR BODY COMPOSITION!

By measuring your body fat, you take the guesswork out of your health and fitness plan and you get an accurate picture of what’s really happening in your body as a result of your diet and exercise program.

Instead of worrying about whether you are losing muscle, or wondering if you are losing fat, you can measure it and KNOW for sure. (I always get a good chuckle when someone tells me they’re worried about losing muscle when they don’t even measure how much muscle they have!)

Instead of being confused by all the “opinions” from weight loss and exercise “experts” who are all telling you something different, you can MEASURE your body composition and based on the results, you can KNOW for sure whether your program is working.

A very wise man once said,

“A single measurement is worth a thousand opinions.”

So, how do you measure body fat?

Thanks to technology, there are some methods today that are so accurate, they can tell you whether your left pinky has more fat than your right pinky! Unfortunately, many of them are either too expensive or they are inaccessible, being found only in hospitals or research facilities

If you want to learn a LOT about various body fat testing methods, chapter 3 of my e-book, Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle (www.burnthefat.com) goes into great detail about the pros and cons of all the various fat testing methods.

Instead of re-hashing it all here, let me give you three quick and easy, practical suggestions:

Suggestion 1: Have a trainer or fitness professional measure you if this service is available at your local health club. Sometimes, there’s a charge - usually $15 - $25, although some clubs offer the service for free to all their members.

Suggestion 2: Purchase an Accu-measure skinfold caliper. Do a google or yahoo search to find a reseller. The Accu-measure was designed to allow you to measure your own body fat in the privacy of your own home (you don’t need someone else to measure you)
Some people wonder if this is really accurate. Truth is, it’s not quite as accurate as a multi site skinfold test from an experienced tester, but what’s most important is not the “accuracy” per se, but the reliability and consistency of your measurements so you can track your progress. Skinfold calipers in general are not accurate or inaccurate, it’s the person doing the test that is accurate or inaccurate.

Suggestion 3: If you have a spouse, roommate, or friend who can measure your body fat, you can purchase a Slim Guide body fat caliper (or just about any brand of caliper) from Creative Health Products: chponline.com

The Slimguide is the best inexpensive caliper available (about $20), but it wasn’t designed for you to measure your own body fat like the Accu Measure. You’ll need someone to measure you with this caliper. Other models of body fat calipers (if you want to splurge), range from $150 to $450. (At our health clubs, I use the electronic “SKYNDEX” caliper with the 4-site “Durnin formula.”)

The calipers come with instructions, or you can use these formulas, which I have used and found to be very accurate:

4 Site formula for men (abdomen, suprailiac, thigh, tricep)
% fat = .29288(sum of 4 skinfolds) - 0.0005(sum of four skinfolds squared) + 0.15845(age) - 5.76377

4-Site Formula for women (abdomen, suprailiac, thigh, tricep)
% Fat = (.29669)(sum of 4 skinfolds) - (.00043)(Sum of four skinfolds squared) + .02963(age) + 1.4072

Body fat percentages vary based on age and gender, but 20-25% body fat is average for women (15-19% is ideal), while 15-20% is average for men (10-14% is ideal). I have detailed charts for body fat charts in my e-book if you’re interested.

Once you know your body fat percentage, then weigh yourself and record your weight and body fat on a progress chart such as the one found in my Burn The Fat Feed The Muscle Program (a fat loss program, not a weight loss program). This chart is how you will track your progress and “keep score.”

You can calculate your lean body mass (muscle and other fat free tissue) very easily just by crunching some numbers:

For example, if you weigh 200 pounds and you have 10% body fat then you have 20 pounds of fat (10% of 200 = 20). That means you have a lean body mass (LBM) of 180 pounds.

Now we’re talking! With this data, you can get a really clear picture of how your exercise and nutrition program are affecting your physique.

Losing weight is very easy. Losing fat - and keeping it off without losing muscle - is a much bigger challenge. If you simply wanted to lose weight, we could just chop off your leg.

Or, (slightly less painful), I could show you how to drop 10 - 15 pounds over the weekend just by dehydrating yourself and using natural herbal diuretics. Wrestlers do it all the time to make a weight class. But what good would that do if it’s almost all water and you’re just going to gain it all back within days?

You don’t have to “throw away your scale” like many “experts” tell you to. By all means, keep using the scale, the tape measure and even photographs and the mirror - the more feedback the better - but body fat is where it’s at.

By the way, I recently bought a chain saw and a shiny new axe from Home Depot, and I’ve been practicing my “American Psycho” and Jack Nicholson, “The Shining” impersonations… so if you want to come to my office any time soon for personal consultation, you’d better have the right answer to my question, “What do you want?”
